Clinical assessment and comparison of ACL reconstruction using synthetic graft (Neoligaments versus FiberTape).

2021

Background Due to the low potential for primary biological healing of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), the most popular approach is currently reconstruction using a graft. Recent research indicates that the technique of strengthening a damaged ligament with synthetic tapes (internal bracing) may be an alternative to reconstructive treatment, especially in cases of partial ACL damage. Objectives To compare and evaluate the possibility of using a synthetic graft (Neoligaments or FiberTape) to treat partial lesions of the ACL. Material and methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Selected from a pool of 128 patients undergoing primary unilateral intra-articular ACL reconstruction du…

Three-port colectomy: reduced port laparoscopy for general surgeons. A single center experience

2016

To evaluate three-port colectomy as an alternative reduced-port laparoscopy technique in colonic surgery.Retrospective study carried out through the analysis of 32 consecutive patients that underwent alternatively to a three ports left colectomy or a conventional laparoscopic colectomy for colonic diseases in order to evaluate the benefits of the reduced-port technique. A multivariate analysis among duration of surgery, hospital stay and conversion rate was performed using the OLS regression and the binary logistic regression. We found a reduced operative time in the three-port colectomy in comparison to the four-port technique (p=0.07). The hospital stay was not found related to the number …

DIALECTIC AND SOCIAL HETEROGENEITY IN ERNESTO LACLAU

2020

The present article aims to examine critically Laclau’s claim that the trend toward social heterogenization revokes the Dialectic, or, more specifically, the clear and strict line of demarcation between what falls within the Dialectic and what falls outside of it. Polemicizing with the assumption of this reading, I argue that the appearance of a radical heterogeneity rather exposes the undecidability of relations between the Dialectic and what is a heterogeneity. To undergo the experience of this relation means not only to confront something that dislocates the Dialectic, but also what makes it what it is. The concrete determination of this limit relation is precisely what is at stake in th…

Antitumor Effect of Cabozantinib in Bone Metastatic Models of Renal Cell Carcinoma

2021

Background: The presence of bone metastases in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) negatively affects patients’ survival. Data from clinical trials has highlighted a significant benefit of cabozantinib in bone metastatic RCC patients. Here, we evaluated the antitumor effect of cabozantinib in coculture models of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and osteoblasts (OBs) to investigate whether and how its antiproliferative activity is influenced by OBs. Methods: Bone/RCC models were generated, coculturing green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged Caki-1 and 786-O cells with human primary OBs in a “cell–cell contact” system. RCC proliferation and the OB molecular profile were evaluated after the cabozantinib treat…

Quantum aspects originated by Gravitation: from cosmology to astrophysics

2018

The Village of the Year Competition Constructing an Ideal Model of a Rural Community in Finland

2016

The Village Action Association of Finland (SYTY) organizes the Village of the Year competition annually to award active rural communities. The competition has taken place since 1985, but after the village action movement was integrated into Finnish rural policy networks in the 1990s, it also became a part of rural policy instruments. The competition can be considered a governing technique that constructs norms and an ideal model for rural communities to pursue. In this article, I study the representation of an ideal rural community by analysing the criteria of the competition. I also look for changes to see whether the integration of the village action movement into rural policy is reflecte…

The trouble with vulnerability. Narrating ageing during the COVID-19 pandemic

2023

In this paper, we have used the exceptional circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic as a window for investigating the ambivalent, stereotypical and often-incongruent portrayals of exceptional vulnerability and resilient self-management that define the self-constructions available for older adults. From the onset of the pandemic, older adults were publicly and homogenously presented as a biomedically vulnerable population, and the implementation of restrictive measures also raised concerns over their psychosocial vulnerability and wellbeing. Meanwhile, the key political responses to the pandemic in most affluent countries aligned with the dominant paradigms of successful and active ag…

El efecto moderador de la edad en la relación entre el valor percibido, las TIC del minorista y la lealtad del cliente

2010

AbstractInformation and communication technology (ICT) may represent a source of benefits for retailers. However, there is a debate in the literature on how ICT influences customer-supplier relationships. In addition, the evidence on the effect of age on consumer attitudes towards retail technological solutions is not conclusive. This paper proposes and tests a model to analyze the influence of retail ICT on consumer loyalty towards the retailer, as well as to assess the moderating role of consumer age on this relationship. As a result, customer assessment of retail ICT, together with perceived value, exerts a positive influence on consumer commitment and satisfaction, being the latter an a…

Regulation of the HTRA2 Protease Activity by an Inhibitory Antibody-Derived Peptide Ligand and the Influence on HTRA2-Specific Protein Interaction Ne…

2021

The mitochondrial serine protease HTRA2 has many versatile biological functions ranging from being an important regulator of apoptosis to being an essential component for neuronal cell survival and mitochondrial homeostasis. Loss of HTRA2 protease function is known to cause neurodegeneration, whereas overactivation of its proteolytic function is associated with cell death and inflammation. In accordance with this, our group verified in a recent study that the synthetic peptide ASGYTFTNYGLSWVR, encoding the hypervariable sequence part of an antibody, showed a high affinity for the target protein HTRA2 and triggered neuroprotection in an in vitro organ culture model for glaucoma. To unravel t…

Low levels of both xanthine dehydrogenase and of cellular retinol binding protein are responsible for retinoic acid deficiency in malignant human mam…

2009

The seeming impairment of retinoid metabolism in human breast tumor cells has been attributed to the lower expression of cellular retinol binding proteins (CRBPs), of alcohol/retinol dehydrogenases, or aldehyde/retinaldehyde dehydrogenases. In a previous study we indicated that xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH) is able to oxidize actively both all-trans-retinol (t-ROL) bound to the CRBP (holo-CRBP) and all-trans-retinaldehyde (t-RAL) to all-trans-retinoic acid (t-RA) in human mammary epithelial cells (HMEC). Since both XDH and CRBP are required for the biosynthesis of t-RA, we have inspected their bioavailability in both estrogen-responsive and nonresponsive human mammary epithelial cancer cells…
